Critical Care Nurses Launch eLearning Modules Designed and Illustrated by WebSync, a division of Mutascio Graphics

SAN DIEGO, CA – WebSync, a leading developer of innovative websites, eLearning illustrations and design of marketing support materials, has completed its yearlong project of a web-based educational tool for the AACN (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses). The online program is a first for the AACN and is designed to orient novice nurses to critical care practice more expediently and effectively. Newly hired nurses log onto the program for orientation and can use different modules to bring them up to speed with the latest critical care fundamentals.

WebSync developed flash animations and illustrations designed to work within the specifications for smooth streaming over the Internet. After input from doctors, nurses and their own research in medical texts, Mutascio created the design and illustrations from supplied storyboard and script material. Modules include: Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Neurological, Renal, Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, Hematologic and Multisystem. After drawings were created, flash animation was used to illustrate important training points in the lessons, such as the path of an electrical impulse in the heart muscle. Illustrations of procedures and processes had to be extremely accurate, quick loading and understandable within the context of the lesson.

Frank Mutascio, lead designer, was enthusiastic about the project. He states, “Our mission was to bring visual clarity to the script. We added dynamic content to heavy copy points to improve retention, and animated biological functions to bring the learning cycle to life. Our greatest contribution was to develop illustrations that were detailed, extremely accurate and can stream with audio over 56k phone lines.”

The program, "Essentials of Critical Care Orientation" (ECCO) gives critical care nurses quick, comprehensive access to the most current industry information available enabling them to provide the best in patient care. The program is self-paced and nurse-managers can organize, track and report a participant's progress via a Learning Management System (LMS). This monitoring system increases supervisors efficiency and productivity in addition to being more cost-effective. Institutions may purchase a site license for the program for a yearly fee with additional multi-year, group or volume pricing levels.

Tina Wiseman, Education Resource Specialist for the AACN reflects on the production of the learning lessons. “This was our first major online education initiative and the rich graphics and animations are a key part of our program’s success. WebSync was always quick to respond to any request. They were very committed to our needs and deadlines.”
